Lego Thief Caught Near Mall

Tigard Police report that early Friday morning, officers were called to a suspicious circumstance at the Washington Square Transit Center (9500 block of Washington Square Road).

A Tri-Met driver reported a man was moving piles of cardboard boxes from a wooded area near the back of a neighboring store to the bus shelter.

Responding officers discovered the boxes – some opened, others unopened – contained Lego sets. Officers later learned the locks to a secure storage area for the Lego store at the mall had been cut.

Officers also discovered a dolly cart in the wooded area. On the ground next to the dolly were several additional cardboard boxes with matching designs. Store employees confirmed the dolly and the missing merchandise had been kept in the secure storage area.

The man at the bus shelter was identified as 40-year-old Nathaniel Nixon, of Portland. Officers discovered burglary tools in his backpack consistent with the damage to the secure storage area. He was arrested on charges of burglary I, criminal mischief II and possession of burglar tools. Officers also discovered Nixon had an outstanding arrest warrant from Multnomah County.

In all, 25 Lego sets worth roughly $7,500 were recovered and returned to the store.
