City Councilors Olivia Clark and Eric Zimmerman will join Downtown Portland Clean & Safe on Friday, October 9th to celebrate the installation of a disco ball by artist Ivan McLean at downtown’s newest public gathering place, Darcelle XV Plaza.
The plaza will host a Disco Party from 4-6pm with entertainment from Rose City Roller Disco Party, Poison Waters and Darcelle XV Showplace, and DJ Leo. The councilors, who supported the disco ball installation with funds from their respective office budgets, will make remarks between 4:45 and 5:15pm.
“My district includes downtown, which is not only the economic engine for the City of Portland but the entire state. So it was vital for my office to make strategic investments in proven strategies that increase foot traffic, particularly cultural activations,” Councilor Clark says. “It’s been a joy to see Darcelle XV Plaza drawing crowds of all ages since it opened in June.”
“My office was happy to step up to help close the project budget gap the City needed to complete construction of Darcelle XV Plaza,” said Councilor Eric Zimmerman. “These placemaking projects not only benefit the people who visit them, but also have a positive impact on the surrounding area and help draw people to Portland. And in the case of Darcelle XV Plaza, it gives our city an opportunity to celebrate and represent the LGBTQ+ community.”
Coincidentally, Isi Matasavage’s “Mirrorball Messenger” crow statue is at the plaza as part of the “Follow the Crows” art trail, which wraps up at the end of this month. If you missed seeing any of the 30 statues, the entire “flock” will be gathered at the plaza for the first — and final — time on October 31 and November 1 before heading to auction in support of OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
