Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day: Weezer - Buddy Holly

Because we love ‘em all. Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day:

Weezer - Buddy Holly

Spike Jonze gets a double this week as we explore one of his all-time masterpieces, Weezer’s “Buddy Holly.” Jonze had a hard time selling Weezer on any of the many video ideas he’d suggested, but when he mentioned the idea of the crafty editing to make them appear to be performing at Arnold’s Drive-In with the cast of Happy Days, well…they said yes, but they didn’t think he could pull it off.

But he did, masterfully. And according to the band there's no CGI here, just very strategic edits and body doubles. It's an iconic 90’s video that nabbed four MTV Video Music Awards and sent Weezer’s career into the next stratosphere. Plus you gotta give a ton of credit to producer Ric Ocasek, who was the guiding hand for Weezer even including the track on the Blue Album. (Rivers Cuomo thought it was too cheesy but Ric wouldn’t let it go, notoriously pestering him with post it notes around the studio).

And you know I like to geek out on a good pop-up video and I would truly be rewriting what was done here with a Consequence of Sound full annotation of the video so you can also give it a view.

Yes it’s true that Weezer released the song on what would have been Buddy Holly’s 58th birthday of September 7th.
